Tuesday, August 11, 2026Guide to Applying for an Electricity Connection or Meter Split with ESCOM
This document provides a practical, step-by-step guide for property owners, tenants, or business operators seeking to obtain a new electricity connection or install an additional prepaid meter (meter split) from the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM). The process is governed by the Malawi Electricity Act and ESCOM's technical safety codes to ensure safe and legal power supply installations.
Understanding the Two Application Types:
New Connection: For properties never connected to the ESCOM grid before. This involves pole planting, service cable installation, and a new main meter.
Meter Split (Sub-Connection): For properties already connected to ESCOM but needing an extra prepaid meter for separate units (e.g., rental flats, servant quarters, or partitioned shops).
Required Documents:
Completed ESCOM Application Form (with load declaration).
Clear site sketch map showing property location and nearest power source.
Valid National ID (or Passport for non-residents).
Proof of property ownership or written consent from the owner.
Critical: A Certified Wiring Form (Completion Certificate) signed by a MERA-licensed electrical contractor.
The 6-Step Application Process:
Internal Wiring: Hire a MERA-licensed electrician to complete all internal wiring or circuit separation before applying.
Submit Application: Visit your nearest ESCOM Customer Service Centre or apply online, submitting the application form, sketch map, and ID copies.
Field Survey: ESCOM technical staff visit the property to assess distance from the grid, load capacity, and connection feasibility.
Pay Quotation: Receive and pay the official ESCOM quotation for connection fees, inspection fees, and deposits.
Submit Wiring Certification: Your electrician submits the completed Wiring/Testing Form, and ESCOM schedules a final safety inspection.
Final Inspection & Installation: After passing the inspection, ESCOM installs the meter, connects the service, and commissions your power supply.
Key Timelines & Rules:
Processing Timeline: Typically 14 to 30 working days after payment and wiring clearance.
Quotation Validity: ESCOM quotations are valid for 30 days from the issue date.
Penalty: Illegal connections or meter bypasses carry heavy fines and legal prosecution.
Primary Contact: Your nearest ESCOM Customer Service Centre (in Blantyre, Lilongwe, Mzuzu, or district offices) or via the official portal at escom.mw.
