Advanced Human Rights Course on Indigenous Peoples’ Rights in Africa 2026 – University of Pretoria
The Centre for Human Rights at the University of Pretoria, in collaboration with the International Work Group for Indigenous Affairs (IWGIA) and the Working Group on Indigenous Populations/Communities in Africa of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, is inviting applications for the Advanced Human Rights Course on Indigenous Peoples’ Rights in Africa 2026.

Course Dates: 23–27 November 2026
The intensive one-week short course will take place from 23 to 27 November 2026 in a hybrid format, allowing participants to attend either online or physically in Pretoria.
Field Trip: 28 November–1 December 2026

A three-day field trip is scheduled for 28 November to 1 December 2026 and will be available to participants attending the course in person.
Course Objectives
The course is designed to strengthen knowledge, understanding and capacity on Indigenous Peoples’ rights, particularly within the African context.
Key objectives are to:
Strengthen knowledge and capacity on Indigenous Peoples’ rights.
Improve understanding of the challenges and rights of Indigenous Peoples among NGOs and government officials.
Encourage the incorporation of Indigenous Peoples’ rights into law school curricula across Africa.
Critically examine the concept and understanding of Indigenous Peoples.
Course Content
The course will explore a broad range of legal, human rights and policy issues affecting Indigenous Peoples in Africa.
Key areas include:
Indigenous Peoples’ Rights and Legal Standards
Conceptual issues concerning Indigenous Peoples in Africa.
International, regional and national standards on Indigenous Peoples’ rights.
Key substantive rights and their application in the African context.
Human Rights Mechanisms
United Nations mechanisms relating to Indigenous Peoples’ rights.
Regional human rights mechanisms.
International and regional processes relevant to Indigenous Peoples.
Development and Indigenous Peoples
Bilateral and multilateral cooperation.
The role of international financial institutions and the business sector.
Indigenous Peoples’ challenges relating to development.
International processes and agendas affecting Indigenous Peoples in Africa.
Who Should Apply?
The course is intended for professionals, practitioners, academics and students with an interest in Indigenous Peoples’ rights.

Applications are open internationally, although the course has a particular focus on Africa. Candidates from African countries are therefore particularly encouraged to apply.
Course Format and Location
The 2026 course will be delivered in a hybrid format, combining online participation with physical attendance at the University of Pretoria.
Online participation is available, while a limited number of participants will be admitted for physical attendance.
Those wishing to attend physically are required to provide a short motivation explaining why they wish to participate in person.
Scholarships
A limited number of scholarships are available for participants attending physically. Scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis.
Applicants seeking physical participation are required to provide a short motivation explaining their interest in attending in person.
Fees
According to the University of Pretoria’s course information:
Online participation: Free.
In-person participation: US$250.
Applicants should not make payment until they have received confirmation that they have been accepted for the course.
Application Requirements
Applicants are required to submit:
A short CV in PDF or Word format, maximum three pages.
One letter of recommendation.
Academic records for students, combined into one PDF or Word document.
A high level of proficiency in English is required because the lectures and course materials are delivered in English.
Applicants also need a Google Gmail account to complete the online application.
