Job Overview:
The Education Specialist role is pivotal in providing technical support and capacity building to the Ministry of Education in Malawi, specifically at the district, zonal, and school levels. The primary focus of this position is to ensure the effective implementation of the BeFIT programme, which integrates Tablet-based learning into educational practices. The Education Specialist will be responsible for training and mentoring District Education Officers, Primary Education Advisors (PEAs), teachers, and School Managers. This role requires a strong commitment to enhancing the quality of education through innovative teaching methods and the effective use of technology in classrooms. The specialist will also work closely with various stakeholders to foster collaboration and ensure that the educational initiatives are aligned with national standards and policies.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide technical support to the Ministry of Education in implementing the BeFIT programme effectively.
Train District Education Officers, PEAs, teachers, and School Managers on integrating Tablet-based learning into their teaching practices.
Develop training materials and resources that support the effective use of technology in education.
Conduct workshops and training sessions to enhance the skills of educators in using Tablet-based learning tools.
Monitor and evaluate the implementation of the BeFIT programme at various educational levels, providing feedback and recommendations for improvement.
Collaborate with local education authorities and stakeholders to promote sustainable educational practices.
Facilitate the sharing of best practices and lessons learned among educators and school leaders.
Support the development of policies and strategies that enhance the use of technology in education.
Engage with communities to raise awareness about the benefits of Tablet-based learning and its impact on student outcomes. 1
Document and report on the progress of the BeFIT programme and its impact on teaching and learning.

Required Qualifications:
Relevant experience in training and mentoring primary school teachers, both in-service and student teachers.
Proven ability to integrate technology into educational practices.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively engage with educators and stakeholders.
Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and foster positive relationships.
Knowledge of the Malawian education system and policies is an advantage.
Competence in using digital tools and platforms for educational purposes.
Educational Background:
A degree in Education, Educational Technology, or a related field is required. Additional certifications in teacher training or educational development will be considered an asset. Candidates should have a strong understanding of pedagogical approaches and the integration of technology in education.
Experience:
A minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in training and mentoring teachers is required. Experience working with educational institutions and government bodies in Malawi or similar contexts is highly desirable. Candidates should also have experience in using technology for educational purposes and a valid motorcycle riding license obtained within the last 2 years, as travel may be required for training and support activities.
Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as it is the primary language of instruction and communication in the education sector. Knowledge of local languages spoken in Malawi is considered an advantage, as it can enhance communication with local communities and educators.
Additional Notes:
This position is a volunteer role with VSO, and while it offers an allowance to cover reasonable living expenses, it may not be sufficient to send money home. Accommodation provided may vary and will be basic, reflecting the conditions in some of the poorest communities. The role requires a commitment to working in challenging environments and a willingness to adapt to local conditions.
