Girl Up, an initiative focused on developing transformative youth leaders advancing gender justice worldwide, is seeking a Director, Safeguarding to lead its global safeguarding strategy and strengthen a culture of care, resilience, safety and youth engagement across its worldwide network.

Founded in 2010, Girl Up equips young people with training, resources and community support to organize, advocate and create social change across areas including education, climate justice, gender-based violence and reproductive health.
The organization supports a global network of more than 430,000 youth leaders across 155 countries and all 50 U.S. states, with an ambition to reach 1 million girls by 2030.
The Role
Reporting to the Co-CEO and Chief Program Officer, the Director, Safeguarding will serve as Girl Up’s primary safeguarding expert and a member of its Extended Leadership Team.
The successful candidate will design, implement and continuously strengthen safeguarding systems that protect youth, staff and community members while preserving the leadership, creativity and advocacy that are central to Girl Up’s mission.
The role will work across global and regional teams to embed safeguarding, wellbeing and belonging throughout the Girl Up experience.
The successful candidate will also collaborate with Global Fund for Children colleagues to ensure alignment with safeguarding requirements. This is a fully remote position.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership and Organizational Culture
Serve as Girl Up’s organizational lead on safeguarding and wellbeing.
Contribute to organizational strategy as a member of the Extended Leadership Team.
Advise the Executive Team on safeguarding risks, emerging trends and best practices.
Foster a culture of safety, resilience, wellbeing and shared responsibility.
Partner with Global Fund for Children to ensure alignment with safeguarding requirements.
Qualifications and Experience
Candidates should demonstrate:
10–15+ years of professional experience in safeguarding, child protection, prevention of sexual exploitation and abuse (PSEA), gender-based violence prevention, youth protection or a related field.
Significant experience designing and implementing safeguarding systems, policies and procedures.
Experience managing safeguarding concerns, investigations and incident response processes.
Experience leading teams and supervising staff.
Experience working with international, multicultural or global organizations, boards, donors and partners.
Experience supporting organizations through periods of growth, transition or organizational change.
A strong track record in organizational capacity building through training, coaching and systems development.
Excellent judgment, discretion and professionalism when handling sensitive matters.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Fluency in a language other than English is an advantage.

Integrate safeguarding considerations into organizational planning, partnerships, programmes, events and youth engagement.
Ensure compliance with relevant legal and regulatory safeguarding requirements.
Safeguarding Systems and Policy Development
Lead the development, implementation and continuous improvement of Girl Up’s safeguarding framework.
Maintain and strengthen safeguarding policies, codes of conduct, reporting mechanisms and response procedures.
Ensure safeguarding approaches are trauma-informed, survivor-centred, culturally responsive and developmentally appropriate.
Develop robust safeguarding mechanisms for online activities, networking platforms and social media.
Develop and manage a safeguarding risk register and ensure appropriate integration with the Global Fund for Children’s safeguarding risk register.
Incident Response and Risk Management
Serve as the primary point of contact for safeguarding concerns.
Lead intake, assessment, documentation, escalation and response processes.
Coordinate with legal counsel, investigators, Global Fund for Children colleagues and partner organizations where appropriate.
Ensure safeguarding responses prioritize safety, dignity, confidentiality and accountability.
Maintain confidential records of safeguarding incidents.
Produce an anonymised annual report identifying patterns, lessons and opportunities for improvement.
Capacity Building, Monitoring and Learning
Develop and deliver safeguarding training for staff, youth leaders, volunteers, funders, partners and other stakeholders.
Ensure new staff and consultants receive appropriate safeguarding induction.
Provide coaching and support to managers and staff dealing with safeguarding concerns and complex situations.
Develop learning resources that strengthen safeguarding knowledge across Girl Up’s global network.
Support organizational assessments, audits and compliance reviews.
Prepare safeguarding reports for leadership and external stakeholders and provide recommendations.
